Artistic Process

I have a unique artistic process.  Just like my style leverages modern concepts, my artistic process embraces technology.  I often begin by loosely scribbling on an iPad to capture an idea.  I then import reference photos I’ve taken or found and create my first sketch. This is when I experiment with composition, color, and negative space.  Often at this point I switch to acrylic ink on paper to paint a background to create a specific mood and focus point.  However, sometimes I transfer my sketch to paper first and paint the subject before painting the background. To transfer my sketch I usually project the image although I also cut stencils if I am trying for an extremely crisp look.

FAQ

I am based in southern Illinois in the US.

I am a self-taught Native artist from the Canadian Pacific Northwest.  At the beginning of my practice I copied well known formline pieces from artists such as Bill Reid and studied the works of Bill Holm.  I also experimented with Chinese ink painting and you can see both influences in my paintings of Northwestern style animals in nature.

I am a contemporary artist who draws deeply on her traditional Native artistic heritage. I draw heavily on the Pacific Northwestern Tsimshian tribal style called “formline.”  However, I modernized traditional formline by expanding or collapsing the whitespace between traditional  shapes and using a full color palette.

My digital works are completed strictly on an iPad and then printed out on archival paper using archival inks. These works are more photorealistic and are usually made up of the four traditional native shapes.  However the shapes are in a full color palette.  For my acrylic paintings I use acrylic ink on hot pressed archival paper.  These works  have at least one Northwestern style subject although there may be other non-Northwestern subjects included.  The color palette is usually black/red for the main subject but may include other styles and colors.

I certainly do! I can print images of up to 13 x 19 inches.  Contact me using the form below to discuss what you would like.
